Welcome to the Pfizer Foundation Biochemistry Discovery Lab at the New York Hall of Science

Where do flower colors come from? How do antacids work? Step into the new Pfizer Foundation Biochemistry Discovery Lab, and measure, mix and mash to find the answers to these questions and others! It's the first hands-on lab in the world open to the public and devoted entirely to biochemistry — the chemistry of living things.

In the lab, you'll see the science in everyday life — from things found in nature to what's in your lunchbox. For instance, discover what chemical reaction creates the holes in bread, how cheese is made, or why some foods are sour. A family or small group can gather around one of the tables in the lab and use the materials and pictorial instructions to do their own experiment. The experiments are best suited for ages 7 and up, but younger children are welcome to try them, too. You'll soon discover that molecules — those super tiny particles that are too small to see individually — are the stars of the show. Each of the 12 experiments in the lab takes only 10 to 15 minutes, but we hope that when you are done, you will have more questions and will want to stay and experiment some more!

This site features several interactives that mirror some of these experiments. Enjoy these interactives and be sure to come to the Hall and experience the Biochem Lab for yourself.
